5 schools closed to shelter evacuated residents

first_img… as Region 9 floods worsenAs water levels continue to rise rapidly throughout Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) docking several communities, five schools were closed and have since been turned into shelters as residents in affected communities are being evacuated. This was revealed by Minister of State Joseph Harmon on Thursday as he updated the media of the situation on the ground and Government’s response to the flooding in the region.“Twenty-five residents had been evacuated from their homes and housed in temporary shelters at Culvert City Nursery School, Tabatinga Community Centre and the Amerindian hostel; while additional affected residents were evacuated toThis road is completely covered as threatening water levels in Region 9 recordedrelatives’ homes on higher grounds,” he stated.Minister Harmon went on to note too that the Regional Emergency Operation Centre was activated on Thursday and has recommended the closure of five schools so that they can be utilised as shelters, including St Ignatius Primary. Access to this school is inundated and challenging to traverse.Among the other schools that have been given approval by the Education Ministry to be suspended are St Ignatius Secondary; Culvert City Nursery; Arapaima Primary and Secondary. The regional administration has indicated that it has the capacity to deal with the flooding as is, however, if the situation worsens, then external assistance would be required.Nevertheless, Harmon said the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is in contact with the region and has identified and quantified the needs requirements in these communities based on preliminary assessments.“You’re looking at aviation fuel to support emergency evacuation should that become necessary in remove areas; water purification tablets; water storage containers, and food and bedding for the residents who are in shelters. I have been advised by the Civil Defence Commission that these items are available and can be deposited there on short notice,” the State Minister asserted. Moreover, he related that acting President, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, has since ordered that Ministers be dispatched to the region to assess the situation. To this end, Junior Public Infrastructure Minister Annette Ferguson has already left for Region Nine and is looking into “infrastructure matters”. Additionally, Minister Harmon, who has responsibility for the CDC, will also be travelling to the region today to also assess the situation. The Minister of State however could not give the extent of the floods, that a more updated assessment would be obtained and given today. But he did note that the floods are at the worst in the Lethem and Tabatinga surroundings.Threating water levelsHowever, Regional Vice Chairman Carl Singh told Guyana Times on Wednesday that communities in the South Pakaraimas and Deep South, and the Rupununi are still inundated. He revealed that at about 05:00h on Wednesday, the Moco-Moco and Takutu Rivers rose some six feet, while the Rupununi River also remains at a “very high” level. Up to late that evening, the water had not receded.“St Ignatius Secondary school was cut off, you have to use boats to get over the bridge; the entire Deep South is cut off; at Nasha Bridge, the water very high there. Nothing can be done in there,” Singh observed.Coupled with the flooding is reportedly a shortage of fuel in Region Nine which is blamed on the bad condition of Linden-Lethem trail. Only last week, a truck transporting fuel toppled while crossing a bridge.A temporary by-pass was carved out but according the Vice Chairman, the truck remains stuck on the bridge as drums of fuel are being shuttled to Lethem. Gatlin gatecrashes Bolt’s 100m farewell party

first_img“The first thing he did was congratulate me and say that I didn’t deserve the boos. He is an inspiration,” Gatlin said of Bolt.Coleman added: “It was an historic moment for me to beat Bolt who has taken this sport to another level and who I watched as I grew up. A humbling experience.“I’m delighted for Justin as we have bonded and become close. I was impressed by the way he handled the pressure and the crowd.”Gatlin has form as the last man to beat Bolt over 100m — by a hundredth of a second in Rome in 2013 — and at the age of 35, can still produce the goods, something he has in the past ironically credited with his four years of forced exile from the track. The evening was all supposed to be about the 30-year-old Bolt claiming a remarkable 12th world gold to add to his eight Olympic golds in what has been a glittering career. And what a gaping hole his absence will leave, no matter how brave a face track and field’s governing body the IAAF try to put on it.Of his 19 global golds, 13 have come in individual events and allied with a charismatic personality, it has guaranteed Bolt recognition as one of the world’s most successful sportsmen.Kingston in Stratford“It feels like most of Kingston is in Stratford tonight,” the stadium announcer said of the welcome afforded Bolt in the eastern London stadium now home to West Ham United in the English Premier League. In temperatures of 19 degrees Celsius (68F), Bolt the showman demonstrated exactly what athletics will miss when he bows out.The sell-out 60,000 crowd roared as he entered the stadium to do his final warm-up on the track. Bolt suffered a dreadful start and could only claim bronze in 9.95sec.“I’m sorry I couldn’t end it on a winning note, but I want to thank you for your support,” said Bolt, who embraced Gatlin after they streaked through the line with no clear victor immediately apparent.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSSEA Games: Biñan football stadium stands out in preparedness, completionSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSWin or don’t eat: the Philippines’ poverty-driven, world-beating pool stars“It’s been a wonderful experience as always.”Gatlin was afforded the same rough reception as he had in the heats and semi-finals, loud boos and jeering ringing around the same stadium where in 2012 his rivalry with Bolt was presented as ‘good against evil’, given the American’s doping-tainted past. Left to right, first placer US athlete Justin Gatlin, second placer US athlete Christian Coleman and third placer Jamaica’s Usain Bolt compete in the final of the men’s 100m athletics event at the 2017 IAAF World Championships at the London Stadium in London on August 5, 2017.  AFPLONDON, United Kingdom — American veteran Justin Gatlin was booed after he stunned Usain Bolt to win the 100m world title in London on Saturday and rain on the Jamaican’s farewell race in the blue riband event.Gatlin, who has served two doping bans and won silvers behind Bolt at the last two world championships, clocked 9.92 seconds, with teammate Christian Coleman winning silver in 9.94sec.ADVERTISEMENT Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. But it was not quite enough.Teeth gritted and eyes glued on the big screen of the Trevor Brooking Stand, Bolt streaked through the finish line but any fairytale individual finish to a startling career was dashed by Gatlin and young pretender Coleman. For the IAAF, could there have been a worse outcome?Russia remains banned from international competition over doping and now their prized athlete, destined for some kind of future ambassadorial role within the body, bows out beaten by a two-time, largely unrepentant drugs cheat. CBB “I tuned it out (the boos) through the rounds and stayed the course,” said Gatlin.“I did what I had to do. The people who love me are here cheering for me and cheering at home.“It is Bolt’s last race. I have had many victories and many defeats down the years. It is an amazing occasion. We are rivals on the track but in the warm-down area we joke and have a good time.”The jeering did indeed continue unabated after it became clear Gatlin, a sprinter whose past divides track and field, had gatecrashed Bolt’s party.Gatlin initially put his finger to his pursed lips as if to hush the crowd, before dropping to his knees to bow down to Bolt.ADVERTISEMENT Creamline sits star, takes Game 1 anywaycenter_img Lacson: SEA Games fund put in foundation like ‘Napoles case’ Robredo should’ve resigned as drug czar after lack of trust issue – Panelo NGCP on security risk: Chinese just technical advisers MOST READ Trump strips away truth with hunky topless photo tweet Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next FEU Auditorium’s 70th year celebrated with FEU Theater Guild’s ‘The Dreamweavers’ DILG, PNP back suspension of classes during SEA Games View commentslast_img read more

Renault India to concentrate on meeting Indian demand; moves UK unit to Romania

first_imgFrench auto maker Renault has shifted production of its popular Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) Duster for the UK market to Romania from India. The company is now concentrating its India output to reduce the waiting period on the Duster in the domestic market. Speaking on this decision, Renault India Country Chief Executive and Managing Director Sumit Sawhney said, “We aim to consolidate our operations in the domestic market. We first want to cater to the Indian market and then any spare capacity would be channelised for exports. We shifted exports of some variants to Europe for logistical and economic reasons as the currency fluctuations were not in our favour.”Renault India exports the Duster to right-hand-drive markets as the country serves as a production hub for all global right-hand-drive cars. At present, Renault sells five models in India, namely the Fluence, the Koleos SUV, Pulse and Scala, in addition to the Duster. It sold 17,510 vehicles in India in the first five months of the fiscal year starting in April, a decline of 33 per cent over the past year.last_img read more

We weren’t well organised and we certainly didn’t play with any sharpness.”“They played a long-ball game but nothing fell for us. It was one of those days where we had to grind out a win,” added the former Manchester United player.”It was nice to win this kind of horribly bad game. That’s what it’s about. He thinks that the game of college basketball is great – and ESPN shouldn’t just be giving the next-level players attention. Here’s video, via North Carolina:Williams makes some good points, but it’s not as-if he hasn’t seen his own share of “green room” players come through his program. Dino Zoff doesnt believe Juventus can win the CL

In fact, quite the opposite, as I believe they are stronger on paper than the Spaniards,” he said to RMC Sport radio as reported by Football Italia.Mario Mandzukic, JuventusJuventus confirm Mario Mandzukic could leave this month Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Sporting director Fabio Paratici confirmed reports that Mario Mandzukic could leave Juventus for a move to an unnamed Qatari team.“However, that doesn’t mean they will win the Champions League. There is more to it than that.”“It doesn’t matter who scores for Juve. I think Paulo Dybala can adapt and play like Isco to help feed Cristiano Ronaldo,” he added.“Gonzalo Higuain has gone to Milan and he is completely different to Karim Benzema. He prefers a central role, whereas Benzema likes to roam all along the front line.”“It’s too early to say if Inter will be the main challengers to Juve. They have the potential in the squad and an opening defeat can happen,” he commented.last_img read more

Prospects for DOD to Avoid a Continuing Resolution Begin to Dim

first_img Dan Cohen AUTHOR It still is possible for Congress to pass both fiscal 2017 spending bills that allocate funding for DOD programs before the end of the fiscal year, but with the window fast closing for lawmakers to complete their work, the Pentagon may be forced to operate under a continuing resolution (CR) starting Oct. 1.The military construction-veterans affairs title is the only spending measure that has cleared both chambers and advanced to a conference committee. But after the House approved the compromise version on a party-line vote, the Senate last week blocked the conference agreement from advancing over Democratic opposition to the portion of the legislation providing emergency funding to address the Zika virus. So far, Senate Democrats have indicated they are not prepared to accept the spending package due to its inadequate level of funding to combat Zika, the spending cuts Republicans used to offset the Zika money and policy provisions they deemed “poison pills.”The Senate possibly could consider and approve the defense spending bill before Congress adjourns July 15 for a seven-week recess. If so, there could be time for the two chambers to reconcile their differences before Oct. 1; the House passed its defense spending bill June 16.Still, to avert a government shutdown, Congress may need to resort to a CR for one or both defense bills, and most of the other spending titles as well. At this point, GOP leaders have not addressed how long a stopgap would last. Some Republicans — and many Democrats — hope to pass a short-term stopgap giving lawmakers until December to craft a year-end omnibus that could be passed during a lame-duck session, reported CQ Roll Call.Other Republicans, though, want a CR to last until next spring to allow the new president an opportunity to weigh in on FY 2017 spending. Another possibility is passing a full-year CR and avoiding any more spending decisions for FY 2017.last_img read more
