Chinese national killed during row at wharf

first_imgForty-two-year-old Chan Wen Wong of Lot 14 Seaforth Street, Campbellville Georgetown, a Chinese national and former cook of the Mei Tung Chinese Restaurant on Sherriff Street, Campbellville, was on Thursday evening stabbed to death during an altercation at the Meadow Bank Wharf in Greater Georgetown.The now dead man and the suspect, identified only as “Chokadhall”, were reportedly engaged into a heated argument which quickly escalated into an altercation. Fishermen in the area parted the combatants, and Chan Wen Wong had reportedly walked away from his adversary.But when he was some distance away, the suspect reportedly ran after Wong, whipped out a sharp object and dealt him one blow to his chest before making good his escape.The injured Wong reportedly fell to the ground, but was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is presently at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.When Guyana Times visited Wong’s home, other tenants explained that he had worked at the Mei Tung Restaurant as a cook for quite some time, before later branching out into the fishing business. He and several other Chinese nationals had rented the house, but none was at home at the time.The other tenants described Wong as a peaceful and helpful individual.Wong, who had reportedly arrived in Guyana as a child, leaving his parents back in China, was known as the Guyanese-Chinese at the Meadow Bank wharf.Apart from buying and selling fish, he also went out to sea. Persons at the wharf were reluctant to speak about what had transpired, but the Police have said they are making every effort to apprehend the suspect.last_img read more
