Recent work has confirmed that grounded ice reached the shelf break in central West Greenland during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Here we use a combination of marine sediment-core data, including glacimarine lithofacies and IRD proxy records, and geomorphological and acoustic facies evidence to examine the nature of and controls on the retreat of a major outlet of the western sector of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) across the shelf. Retreat of this outlet, which contained the ancestral Jakobshavns Isbræ ice stream, from the outer shelf in Disko Trough was rapid and progressed predominantly through iceberg calving, however, minor pauses in retreat (tens of years) occurred on the middle shelf at a trough narrowing forming subtle grounding-zone wedges. By 12.1 cal kyr BP ice had retreated to a basalt escarpment and shallow banks on the inner continental shelf, where it was pinned and stabilised for at least 100 years. During this time the ice margin appears to have formed a calving bay over the trough and melting became an important mechanism of ice-mass loss. Fine-grained sediments (muds) were deposited alternately with IRD-rich sediments (diamictons) forming a characteristic deglacial lithofacies that may be related to seasonal climatic cycles. High influxes of subglacial meltwater, emanating from the nearby ice margins, deposited muddy sediments during the warmer summer months whereas winters were dominated by iceberg calving leading to the deposition of the diamictons. This is the first example of this glacimarine lithofacies from a continental-shelf setting and we suggest that the calving-bay configuration of the ice margin, plus the switching between calving and melting as ablation mechanisms, facilitated its deposition by channelling meltwater and icebergs through the inner trough. The occurrence of a major stillstand on the inner shelf in Disko Trough demonstrates that the ice-dynamical response to local topography was a crucial control on the behaviour of a major outlet in this sector of the GrIS during retreat.
It’s perhaps understandable that there are a lot of symbols that are used to indicate gay pride. The whole concept of being closeted seems to indicate a need for a code, a covert way of indicating we’re-here-and-we’re-queer, whether or not that symbol will register in wider society. But if there’s a gay pride symbol that everyone in the western world knows, regardless of their own orientation, it’s the rainbow flag. Seen hanging out of pubs, clubs, bars and bookshops, it’s an unashamed proclamation – this is a place where queer people are welcome. With that in mind, it’s probably unsurprising that the first time a rainbow flag was used as an unambiguous symbol of gay pride was in San Francisco. In 1978, local artist Gilbert Baker designed the first version of what would become the rainbow flag. The initial version had eight stripes, hand-dyed, with hot pink and turquoise in addition to the commonly-seen six colours. Later in the year, the city responded to the murder of its first openly gay supervisor, Harvey Milk, by draping that year’s Pride Parade with a modified version of Baker’s flag. This new version, a symbol of the city’s defiance, was modified to enhance its symmetry, and the subsequent six-striped flag became the one most often seen today. As for why rainbow stripes were used at all – history seems a little reticent on that point. But it seems clear that the bright colours have taken root in queer cultural consciousness since. So much so that the self-proclaimed “queer nation”, the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands – which claims to be a country in its own right, having seceded from Australia, complete with its own mail service, currency and national anthem – has, perhaps inevitably, claimed the six-striped rainbow as its official flag. There are other pride symbols – notably, the pink triangle, originally used by the Nazis as a symbol to be worn by homosexuals in concentration camps, and reclaimed as a queer symbol afterwards, and the black triangle, used for lesbians specifically. There are other flags, too, denoting bisexual pride, transgender pride, family pride, even leather pride – but the rainbow flag did it first. There is no permanent settlement on the Gay and Lesbian Islands, so no embassies or ships fly it, but do they need to? It’s bright, it’s eye-catching, and it’s already flying in hundreds of places all over the world. By Iona Sharma
Smartmatic has been used in elections around the world. In Venezuela’s election, the software was manipulated to report a skewed tally. But the company said that it was an anomaly and cited the lack of election monitors as part of the problem. In the United States, monitors from both parties are allowed to watch vote counting. In the tweet, Mr. Giuliani appeared to backtrack on an earlier claim that Dominion Voting Systems, which makes the secure software used by voting machines, was involved in changing tallies, claiming that the company was in fact a “front” for Smartmatic, which he claimed was really doing the computing. Mr. Giuliani had previously said he was in contact with “whistle-blowers” from Dominion, and he claimed, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that the company had altered vote tallies in battleground states that had elected Mr. Biden such as Michigan and Georgia. On Friday, Dominion pushed back against related claims, citing a joint statement by the Department of Homeland Security stating that there was “no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.”- Advertisement – On Thursday, a group of federal, state and local officials working with the department said the election was “the most secure in American history.” – Advertisement – – Advertisement – Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, continued on Saturday his effort to delegitimize votes cast through electronic voting machines, citing several conspiracies connected to the companies that make the machines and the software they run in a post on Twitter.Looking to sow doubt about the vote count in multiple swing states that were recently called for President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., Mr. Giuliani hinted support for a discredited theory that one of the companies that manufactures the voting machines used in some states, Smartmatic, is controlled by the billionaire philanthropist George Soros.- Advertisement – “Look up SMARTMATIC and tweet me what you think?” Mr. Giuliani wrote. “It will all come out.”Hours later, President Trump picked up a similar refrain, stating in a tweet that the election was “stolen” by “privately owned Radical Left company, Dominion,” without providing evidence or explaining why Dominion was distinct among the many other privately owned election system vendors that routinely administer elections in the United States.Speculation that Mr. Soros has any influence over Smartmatic or its operations has been thoroughly debunked, and he does not own the company. Mr. Soros’s distant connection to the company is through his association with Smartmatic’s chairman, Mark Malloch-Brown, who is on the board of Mr. Soros’s Open Society Foundation.
23 June 2006Several major accidents on South Africa’s roads have captured the attention of the media recently. At the same time, the scale of road deaths around the world has been exposed by the Commission for Global Road Safety, which released its Robertson Report this month, urging the leaders of developing countries in particular to do more to address road safety.Poorer countries hit hardestThe Robertson Report finds that more than 85% of road traffic deaths and injuries occur in low- and middle-income countries, costing their economies an estimated US$64.5-billion to $100-billion annually. Emphasizing that global road safety is seriously under-resourced, the report urges governments in low- and middle-income countries to adopt their own road casualty reduction targets, which it says should be “ambitious but achievable”.The World Health Organization estimated that almost 1.2-million people around the world died and as many as 50 million were injured in road crashes in 2002 – and forecast that, unless effective action were taken, these figures would double by 2020.Road accidents are a major and growing public health epidemic, a “disease” comparable in its destructive capacity to malaria and tuberculosis – yet one which, in most cases, is known to be preventable.Road ‘accidents’ in South AfricaThe first comprehensive statistical analysis of road accidents in South Africa, published by the Road Traffic Management Corporation in 2005, found that 90% of crashes in South Africa in 2004 were the result of lawlessness – in other words, were foreseeable and preventable and hence not strictly “accidents” at all.Data collected from accident reports for 2004 indicated that most accidents on South Africa’s roads could be attributed to two or more simultaneous offences.“Human factors” – such as non-adherence to traffic rules and aggressive, reckless, negligent or inconsiderate driver behaviour – were the major contributing factors, playing a causal role in 70-80% of all accidents. These included driving too fast for the circumstances, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.“Vehicle factors” such as poor lights, smooth or damaged tyres and poor brakes contributed to a further 10-15% of accidents.Poor road conditions – which have drawn much media attention lately – only contributed to 5-10% of accidents in 2004.Changing attitudesFrom these statistics it becomes evident that the answers to most road safety questions will depend not only on funding, effective road safety strategies and visible campaigns. They will have to include an attitude change from those who travel and walk South Africa’s roads – one which incorporates respect for the value of human life. Not only will effective enforcement have to remove transgressors from the road, but ordinary citizens will also have to take responsibility for their actions.South African commuters have recently been empowered to report dangerous conditions and driver behaviour to the National Commuter Hotline. It is envisaged that this will enable the country’s transport authorities to address these complaints with those subsidised companies neglecting the safety of commuters. Is it possible to change attitudes towards road safety? The alternative is too scary to consider .Advocate Johan Jonck is the developer of the website www.arrivealive.co.za, a private initiative to complement the efforts of the Department of Transport to enhance awareness of road safety in South Africa.

Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Harold Watters, Ohio State University Extension agronomistSo I made a trip to Omaha and back in mid-July. I attended the Sustainable Agronomy conference there and drove to the conference. Part of my goal was to do a windshield tour to see what the crops really looked like. Generally, nothing looks as it should. Ohio and eastern Indiana are the worst in many ways, but the total loss of crops due to floods in western Iowa and into Missouri were the most tragic — many losing not just this year’s crop but also last year’s that was still in the bin when floods hit this spring.I drove out and back by two different routes to get a bigger picture of what’s there, on I-80 out and U.S. 36 back for the most part. I rated the crop on a 1-10 scale with 1 being just planted or mostly flooded out to a 10 being perfect — I think I only saw one 10. We made 110 observations doing a check on both sides of the road every 20 minutes. Dark cut off our observation at around Indianapolis on the way back.Rating of corn and soybean crops on a trip from central Ohio to Omaha and back. The scale is 1 to 10, with 1 being just planted to nearly flooded out and 10 being as nice as you would expect in mid-July.OhioIndianaIllinoisIowaMissouriAve corn220.127.116.11.87.0Ave soy3.03.73.35.64.6Unplanted25%30%3%13%39%It really isn’t pretty anywhere. This year you really need a cover cropTypically, I place a cover crop article here now as I think early August is a great time to plant our fall seeded cover crops. It’s after wheat harvest, and this year there are maybe 1.5 million acres of Ohio cropland unplanted — put a cover crop there too. Mark Sulc, our OSU Forage specialist, is great at finding the value of cover crops, I choose his advice over many of the so-called cover crop experts. He created a quick and dirty table to point out some choices for summer to late-summer seedings. In addition to the species to choose from he has timing, seeding rate, and expected yield — this can also indicate the amount of cover for soil erosion protection too. He adds Crude protein and NDF as well so you may see the nutritional value if haying or grazing.Annual Forage Agronomic Guidelines and Characteristics from R. Mark Sulc ([email protected]) on July 8. Yield and nutritive value vary greatly with maturity stage at harvest. If you want additional ideas for cover crops that you do not intend to feed, and there is much overlap, then see the Midwest Cover Crop Council’s website and cover crop calculator: http://mccc.msu.edu/covercroptool/covercroptool.php. Much of my experience is with oat, and winter pea. For peas from the planting date trials I conducted, peas like an August to mid-September planting. With August planting you will get a lot of fall growth, then it will usually winter kill. With a September planting it will most likely not give you much fall growth, but survive the winter and continue growth in the spring. Peas are great to plant into; and have given me the best seed bed I think I have ever had for no-till corn.
