A suspicious package that turned out to be nothing more than an abandoned suitcase filled with socks and coins prompted the Dept. of Public Safety to send out a Trojans Alert on Monday afternoon. The alert warned individuals to stay away from the area of Figueroa Street and Exposition Boulevard.Alarmed · The Dept. of Public Security reacted Monday to a suspicious package near the intersection of Figueroa Street and Exposition Boulevard. – Ralf Cheung | Daily Trojan The Trojans Alert system allows DPS to send out emergency messages to members of the USC community.Los Angeles Police Department received a phone call that a suspicious package was left near the Tuscany apartments, according to DPS Capt. David Carlisle. The caller was a pedestrian who had walked by the area and seen the bag, Carlisle said.“At about 12:15 [p.m.] we got a call that on the 37th block of South Figueroa there was an unattended suitcase left there for a while,” said Christopher Ngo, a LAPD media relations spokesperson. The Trojans Alert was then released at approximately at 1:23 p.m. because of DPS’ concerns over student safety as LAPD was called to the scene for precautionary measures.“When we discovered that [LAPD was] blocking the street, we decided that it was appropriate to notify our students to stay out of that area,” Carlisle said. After officers were unable to identify the bag’s owner, they called the LAPD bomb squad to the scene to further investigate the package’s contents, according to Ngo.“Officers arrived at the location and observed the suitcase, then called the bomb squad, which responded around 12:54 [p.m.] and checked the surrounding area,” Ngo said.A second Trojan Alert message was sent out at approximately 1:29 p.m. — just minutes after the first alert — stating that it was safe to return to the area and that police activity was over.“They went in and searched the briefcase and found nothing,” Ngo said. “All that was found inside the bag was socks and coins.”This is the second instance of a suspicious package left near the University Park Campus this month.A package was left on April 18 near the entrance at McClintock and Jefferson avenues, and the campus was blocked off from the Waite Phillips Hall to the Lyon Center. As the LAPD bomb squad was en route to campus, the package was determined to be just a black bookbag.
Sometimes, the Lakers try to make the extra pass and it ends up intercepted or sailing out of bounds.“Those are the ones we’re willing to live with,” Walton said. “But it’s the careless ones, the catch-on-top-of-the-floor-and-take-three-steps-before-you-dribble-the-ball turnovers that we’ve got to try to get rid of.”The matchup between the Lakers and 76ers will feature the league’s two most prolific teams in terms of turnovers. While the Lakers rank at the bottom, the Sixers check in at 29th with 17.4 giveaways per game.BALL AND PAINBall has described the sleeve he likes to wear on his leg as his “swag pad.” On Tuesday, he was sporting sleeves on both legs for the more practical purpose of marginalizing the tightness he has felt in both calves in recent days.“They’re getting there,” Ball said. “Still a little tight but we are still working on them. … Just tight and (the) knots aren’t coming out.”Ball endured one of his worst games in Sunday’s 23-point loss to the Rockets, finishing with just two points and missing all four of his shots from the field while committing three turnovers in 22 minutes. He wasn’t about to pin that performance on his leg pain.“I don’t think it had too much to do with it,” Ball said. “Just went out there and had a bad game. Shake it off and come back (better) next time.” EL SEGUNDO — Two days removed from when his team last committed a turnover, Luke Walton continued to harp on what he perceives to be the Lakers’ biggest issue in this, their season of giving … the ball away.“If I had the magic wand,” Walton said, “that’d be the one thing I would fix that would give us the best chance of getting a win.”The Lakers are averaging a league-worst 17.5 turnovers per game and have committed 21 in each of their last two games, losses to the Houston Rockets and the Denver Nuggets. They have now lost five in a row and face another daunting December, with a four-game trip to the Eastern Conference that begins Thursday in Philadelphia. As Walton said, he is no master of the dark arts. So when the Lakers convened to practice Tuesday, he had to dial up a more old-school solution to their turnover curse. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr may have been caught using a burner account.NBA star Kevin Durant made burner accounts famous in 2017 when he got caught using them, and since then, Twitter detectives have been trying to catch more athletes. In 2018, 76ers GM/president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo was forced to part ways with the franchise after his burner account fiasco. Jayce Frost tweets https://images.daznservices.com/di/library/sporting_news/b/dc/jayce-frost-tweets-ftr_knylqyoxw9ps1o5gszn0xwqsl.png?t=-999917381&w=500&quality=80Carr has not commented on the burner account publicly, but whoever is behind the account made it active again just to send a DM to Fehr.”Wanted to reach out to and clear up I am not a Carr or anyone associated with them lol,” Frost wrote. “It’s crazy how much all that took off, just a Fresno State fan who loves some random debates on Twitter. I have a lot of Carr tweets just because people are so passionate against him but his [numbers] disagree with some of the narratives.” UPDATE: We have received a statement from the “just wanted to make clear I am definitely not Derek Carr,” jayce_frost pic.twitter.com/aFfAdVUlDZ— Tom (@TJFsports) August 5, 2020Fehr continued to make their DM conversation public. In a follow-up message, Frost asked, “Do you really think an NFL QB would have a burner?” (via @TJFsports) Carr could be the latest who is outed using a burner account, as a Chiefs fan believes is using a Twitter under the handle “Jayce Frost.”MORE: Ranking all 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFLIt started with Carr’s comments to reporters on Tuesday when he said he didn’t want to be disrespected.”I have a lot to prove to myself. I have a lot to prove to my organization,” Carr said. “I’m going to be completely honest with you: I’m tired of being disrespected.”Chiefs fan Tom Fehr reacted to that comment joking, “If I were Derek Carr and was tired of being disrespected I would simply try being a good quarterback.” That’s when Frost responded, “Honest question — do you not understand football or do you just troll?”From there, Fehr looked at the account and discovered something interesting. The Twitter account was mostly posting about defending Carr, and posted about Fresno State’s uniforms. Carr played college football at Fresno State.Uhhhh guys I’m 99% certain I found Derek Carr’s burner account, someone only tweeting about Derek Carr and Fresno State pic.twitter.com/5JdiFB6hLM— Tom (@TJFsports) August 5, 2020Fehr said “within minutes” the account was deactivated, furthering suspicion that Carr was behind it. Some speculated it could be one of his brothers’ accounts, but a few tweets from that account made it seem unlikely. Some other Twitter users did some more digging and found repeated tweets of this account defending Carr. One in particular was @RealBirdLawyer, who compiled a lengthy list of tweets from Frost all talking about Carr and defending the Raiders QB in one way or another. Share on: WhatsApp Kenyan sports minister Hassan Wario accepted a lot of work needed to be done to upgrade the other three concerned stadiums in Nairobi, Machakos and the north-western town of Eldoret.“We are not moving at the pace expected of us but there have a lot of things have been happening behind the scenes. We were looking for the money, setting up the contracts and visiting the sites,” Wario said.“All that have come together and now we are moving to the next phase, which is awarding the contracts and ensuring that people work day and night. Let me not lie to you, we have a lot of work to do. But we are up to it and are promising CAF that we reached the target.“We are not only fully committed to hosting Chan but other African football competitions in the future.Rwanda hosted the last tournament in February 2016 which was won for the second sucessive year by the Democratic Republic of Congo. GOVERNMENT SUPPORT ASSURED: File photo as Kenyatta sends off the Olympics team. Nairobi, Kenya | AFP | Only two of five Kenyan stadiums earmarked to host the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in January 2018 are ready, a visiting CAF delegation said on Saturday. But the delegation led by CAF vice-president Constant Selemani brushed aside concerns that the 16-team championship, reserved for players who are playing in their domestic leagues, might be moved to another country saying Kenya should be able to deliver on its promises.Selemani, who is also president of the Congolese Association of Football Federation (FECOFA) said CAF would make a third inspection of the facilities at the end of August to assess progress before making a final decision.“We have agreed that from now work would be stepped up on the infrastructure. CAF believed in the Kenyan government’s committment to host this competition when we awarded it in 2014, and we cannot start to doubt that now.“We have been given a guarantee that Kenya will correct the situation, and at the end of August we will be able to know exactly where we stand and how much per cent of the work has been done before we decide the way forward.”Officials of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) said only the Nairobi’s Kasarani stadium and the Meru Kinoru stadium, on the slopes of Mount Kenya have been declared almost complete.
