A record number 83 microenterprises are exhibiting under one roof in the Local Enterprise Village, representing every county in Ireland. Exhibitors are from a diverse range of sectors including food, retail, tourism, manufacturing, energy and sport, with all 31 Local Enterprise Offices supporting small businesses at the Ploughing. The wheaten scone is more than just bread baked in Donegal, because it is also bread made from as many Donegal products as O’Donnell’s can possibly use.“It’s called the Wild Atlantic Wheaten because ingredients are sourced from along The Wild Atlantic Way and in as many cases as possible, from Donegal,” said Andrew McElhinney of O’Donnell’s.“Some of the key ingredients are Jordan’s Sea Salt, Donegal Rapeseed Oil and Donegal Buttermilk,” he added. That collaboration is a perfect example of how food businesses in the county are co-operating and collaborating to open up new and exciting markets, and O’Donnell’s also join forces with local microbrewery Donegal Brewing Co. and use their Donegal Blonde Beer to produce Donegal Blonde cake. That’s a reflection of the synergy that now exists among food businesses in Donegal and the growing reputation of the county as a food destination, thanks to the ongoing efforts of The Food Coast, Donegal’s Good Food Network.“We also showcased our other range as well including our Donegal Blonde Cake, Chocolate Orange Cake and our gluten-free muffins,” Andrew added.Precision engineer Dean Gillespie is also a part-time farmer and it was the time and effort it was taking to dose and vaccinate his sheep that saw him come up with a new engineered product called ‘Sheepmate.’Pictured Dean Gillespie, Sheepmate.ie; Ursula Donnelly, Local Enterprise Office; Eamon Scanlon, Sheepmate.ie at the Local Enterprise Village, built by the network of Local Enterprise Offices, at the National Ploughing Championships. You need somebody there to help you for starters, then you have your pockets full and a pack on your back and it’s easy to trip over the lines as the sheep moved around in the pen. I knew there had to be some way to make this a bit handier, so I came up with Sheepmate.”Dean’s invention is a simple and portable system that allows a farmer hold everything he needs for dosing and vaccinating in one place, with a line that feeds from the system according to the length the farmer needs.“You simply attach Sheepmate to the side of the pen using Velcro straps and everything is there in the one place. Using the system one man can get the job done now in a fraction of the time so it’s a great time-saving device and everyone knows that time is money!”Dean’s ingenuity to spot a potential niche market is typical of the many small businesses being supported in Donegal by the Local Enterprise Office and the Killygordon man also owns Gillespie Polytunnels who supply quality polytunnels across Ireland and beyond.“Donegal Local Enterprise Office and Donegal County Council were proud to support the small businesses representing our county at the biggest ever Local Enterprise Village. The National Ploughing Championship is one of Europe’s largest outdoor events and initiatives such as the Local Enterprise Village, offered small business owners the opportunity to boost sales and break into new markets,” Michael Tunney, Head of Enterprise at Donegal Local Enterprise said.
