The idea of a multiverse (an ensemble of universes like our own visible one) has been criticized as unscientific because it would be unobservable, even in principle. Now, however, some theoretical physicists are claiming that bubble universes beyond ours could be detected in the cosmic microwave background radiation – provided they collide with our universe. Does this bring multiverse theory back into the realm of science? National Geographic News, posting an article on this idea, said, “The multiverse, if it exists, may have sprung out of a chaotic fluctuation of empty space.” Chaotic motions from other bubble universes might “bruise” our universe and leave telltale patterns in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Matthew Johnson, a theoretical physicist at the Perimeter Institute, with colleagues, is working on an algorithm to find the patterns. But what to look for? Sean Carroll, physicist at Caltech, warned that “People tend to recognize patterns whether or not they are there.” Trouble is, nobody knows what the needle in the haystack would look like. “Even with better data from Planck” (a new space telescope measuring the CMB in finer detail), “finding evidence of a universe-to-universe smashup is a game of chance, thanks to the nearly infinite possible outcomes.” For this reason and the fact that any deviations in the CMB are likely to be extremely subtle, Carroll thinks the quest is “a long shot”. But the implications would be so earth shattering, he is eager to see what Johnson and team find. They don’t know what they are looking for, they don’t know what they might expect to find, and they won’t be able to confirm it when they see it. Imagine looking for a what-not in a pile of whatever, that might leave an infinite set of possible outcomes. You could claim success and nobody could ever confirm or deny it. NG unabashedly stated another piece of nonsense: “The multiverse, if it exists, may have sprung out of a chaotic fluctuation of empty space.” The whatever, if it exists, might have spring out of a chaotic what-not. Isn’t science wonderful. The elephant in the room that Carroll, Johnson, Hawking and all the other multiverse advocates are overlooking is the question of ultimate origins. Even if, in their wildest dreams, in spite of overwhelming odds, they had some basis for claiming that some other bubble is pushing on our bubble, they would merely displace the question of ultimate origins to another location. Let them start with what Francis Schaeffer called “nothing nothing” – no space, no time, no laws of nature, no fields, no categories. From absolutely nothing, get them to derive not only a universe, but reasoning beings questioning its origin and destiny. The folly of such a quest is self-evident. Exercise. The best recent example of Bluetooth Smart in action is the way the new Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch connects with the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone. Apple also uses a Bluetooth Smart function in iOS 7 with a new feature called iBeacon. This feature creates a bubble area around an app “a beacon” that is similar to a geo-fence. When you and your bubble come into contact with another bubble (say, a grocery or a retail store) an action will occur. For instance, if I am at my local coffee shop and it has an iBeacon, it will connect to iPhone and allow me to do something like make a payment or send me a coupon. iBeacon could be set up in an apartment to connect other gadgets to the iPhone via Bluetooth Smart the minute you walk in the door.Wi-Fi Direct is similar to Bluetooth Low Energy, but in many ways is more robust. Wi-Fi Direct is a way to create a connection between two devices without going through Wi-Fi router in a fairly simple manner. The best example of Wi-Fi Direct is how easy it has become to connect your home printer with your computer. Instead of the lengthy and complicated process that used to take place when connecting two devices, now it is simple as hitting a single button on the computer and one on the printer and saying “connect.” Wi-Fi Direct can be used for streaming music or video from one device to another, sharing documents, media or pictures or letting one device control another (such a your PC to your printer). They allow interaction between devices on a one-to-one basis. Imagine walking into your house and everything inside automatically connecting to your smartphone. Imagine that your new iPhone 5S or Android smartphone could control all aspects of your life. Different companies have different agendas, different platforms and the same basic need: your money. Hence, those companies will create solutions that will force you to stay within their ecosystem and product lines.AirDrop can only work with other Apple products. Google’s Chromecast TV dongle (that lets you use a tablet or smartphone as a remote for your TV to watch YouTube or Netflix) uses standard Wi-Fi and doesn’t play nice with other wireless streaming standards like Miracast or Wi-Fi Direct. Samsung’s “S Beam” and other sharing capabilities are intended to be used only with other Samsung devices like TVs, laptops or tablets. Most consumers will get a new smartphone about once every two years. Multiply that by three or more for other consumer items, like a new car, home security system or television, and you can see the problem. To set up your new iPhone 5S as a universal remote, you are going to need to be on the bleeding edge of just about every kind of new technology. That doesn’t mean that your new iPhone or top of the line Android smartphone won’t be able to perform many of these functions on an individual basis. You can use your iPhone 5S to stream media to an Apple TV and share files with friends. Or to control a smart thermostat like Nest. Solutions may be scattered today, but the journey to make your smartphone the remote that controls everything around you is well on its way.

Unlock the hidden powers of cinematography by learning the three layers of shot composition: foreground, middleground and background.When you first pick up a camera and frame a shot, you instinctively look for certain things. You line up your subject and position them in their environment. You check lighting and color temperature. You wrestle with focus and depth of field. You follow or create motion.However, to truly unlock the power of cinematography, and to train your eye to find the most distinguished compositions, you need to understand, embrace, and master the multiple layers available to you.Let’s explore the foreground, middleground and background layers of shot composition and how you can harness their distinctive natures to create truly eye-popping and engaging cinematography.The ForegroundAs you might expect, of the three layers, the foreground is closest to the audience’s eye. Using an example from user wowzabob‘s imgur post where he breaks down compositions in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, we see the foreground layer outlined in red. Focus notwithstanding (more on that below), the red area is the foremost plane in the composition.The MiddlegroundThe middleground is the space within a composition between the foreground and the background. In the shot composition above, it is the yellow-outlined space, which you can see juxtaposed against the red foreground (the obstructive bars) and the out-of-focus background.The BackgroundThe background is the space further away, behind both the foreground and middleground. You can see it illustrated above: the flag (outlined in red) is in the foreground, and the ship (outlined in yellow) is in the middleground; the land, helicopters, and sky (outlined in green and blue) are in the background.Working with Multi-Layered CompositionsNow let’s look at an image without the outlines. In wowzabob‘s imgur post, we also see a shot composition from Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. Can you spot the three layers in the composition? In the foreground we have the out-of-focus steering wheel, in the middleground we have Robert DeNiro’s character, and in the background we have the extremely out-of-focus cars.Notice how the three different layers work together to provide depth and complexity. Focus is a large part of where your eye comes to rest, but beyond that, you see a sophisticated composition that makes full use of the available imagery. See how the above image from Taxi Driver compares to a composition from a different film: the 2005 adaption of The Producers.This composition is much more simplistic. There are only two layers, a middleground (or foreground, depending on how you look at it) and a background. For some, this may seem more inviting, while, for others, it may just be boring and bland.Using Focus and Depth of FieldImage via Wikipedia.Without getting too deep into the technical aspects of focus and depth of field or range, it’s important to understand how you can use focus to emphasize different layers. In the image above, you can see the three distinctive layers. However, only one of the three is in focus.The foreground (where the cat’s paw is) is slightly out-of-focus, while the background (the vague colors behind) is severely out-of-focus. You can see the difference in the following two photos. Images via Wikipedia.In the top photo, the foreground is in focus, and the background is slightly out-of-focus. Your eye moves naturally to the flower in the foreground, but just barely. The background can still draw some of your attention.In the bottom photo, the flower in the foreground is still in focus, but the background is heavily out-of-focus. This forces you to focus exclusively on the foreground since the background is merely a smear of colors.Understanding Deep FocusSo how do you make a composition where all three layers are equally in-focus? This technique is often called deep focus, or, more plainly, a very large depth of field. There are many ways to achieve deep focus in photography and video (which you can read about here). Perhaps the best example is the iconic deep focus shots in Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane.You can see how the foreground, middleground and background are all equally in-focus and divided across the screen. The Opposition parties in Bihar appear to be in introspection mode after their crushing defeat in the assembly polls. Reduced to a minuscule presence in the legislature, their leaders are already looking into their political future.In a significant development, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leaders recently announced that the party would project its national president Ram Vilas Paswan as the future chief ministerial candidate of the state.Their announcement came only a day after Paswan visited a slum area in the state capital last week, where he promised to build concrete houses for all the Dalit families if he became the chief minister “with their blessings”. This is the first time his partymen have tried to project him as the CM candidate.In the last assembly election, the LJP and its pre-poll ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) had projected Lalu Prasad for the top job. The LJP had presented Paswan’s younger brother Pashupati Kumar Paras as its deputy chief minister candidate. It was obvious that Paswan would steer clear of state-level politics and concentrate on national politics.Even though his party remains an ally of Lalu’s RJD, his supporters have started saying that the projection of a leader of Paswan’s stature could turn the tide in their favour in the next polls.The next assembly elections are a good four years away but the LJP’s stand is politically significant.After its poll debacle, the majority of LJP workers believed that the projection of Lalu as the chief ministerial candidate of their alliance did not go down well with the voters. The LJP won only three seats out of the 75 that it contested. Citing the performance of the party in the previous assembly elections, its supporters had also advocated going solo in the polls.advertisementPolitical pundits had expected the RJD and the LJP to go their separate ways after the poll rout but Paswan and Lalu had put up a united front.One of the immediate reasons for it was Paswan’s election to the Rajya Sabha. It was because of Lalu’s support that Paswan was able to return to Parliament after his defeat in the Lok Sabha election in 2009. Therefore, he had a personal reason to swear by their alliance.However, the cracks have been visible in the past few months.Both the leaders chose to launch separate agitations against the Nitish government. Paswan took the lead in spearheading the agitation against the government on various issues, ranging from the firing in Forbesganj on Muslims to Nitish Kumar’s demand for special status to Bihar.He was also the first to reach the Bhajanpura village near Forbesganj where the police firing had taken the lives of five persons last June. But Lalu decided to undertake a march to the same village three months later.There has been no apparent coordination between the RJD and the LJP at the grassroots level over the years. In fact, they have been blaming each other for the defeat of their respective parties in the polls.Against this background, the LJP leaders’ announcement to project Paswan as their CM candidate assumes political significance.But will Lalu be ready to make way for Paswan? He is unlikely to give up his claim also because his party has had a bigger presence in the state over the years.The RJD appears to be in no hurry to respond to the LJP’s announcement but it may well be the beginning of the end of their honeymoon that did not provide any sweet memory to either partner in the past three years of collaboration. ===Honey where did you hide the money? The Bihar government has launched a massive drive against corruption with vigilance bureau officials arresting more than 400 public servants.But the campaign seems to have spurred some people to devise new methods for seeking bribes. The Central Bureau of Investigation ( CBI) recently arrested a bank manager at Dulhin Bazar near Patna who had demanded Rs 20,000 from a villager for issuing a Kisan Credit Card.The banker, however, never accepted bribes at his office. He used to tell people to hand over the money to his wife at home in Patna.The CBI sleuths had to work hard to find out where the bribe money was kept during a raid at his home recently. They finally recovered it from a mixer- grinder hidden by the manager’s wife in the kitchen. ===THE Bihar government is doing all it can to promote sports in the state.Not only has it started honouring players who excel in different sports, but is also providing government jobs to those who play at the national and international level. Chief minister Nitish Kumar said the government would give jobs this year to 150 players – five each in each discipline.advertisementLast year, the government had provided employment to 32 sportspersons. On the occasion of Sports Day on August 29, the government felicitated a total of 229 players, including Squadron Leader Nirupama Pandey, the first woman to scale Mount Everest, Rajesh Choudhary, Arjuna awardee in yachting and Chandrashekhar Choudhary, who had won a silver medal in shooting in the Commonwealth Games.===Good samaritan at Patna zoo Baidyanath Paswan, an animal-keeper at the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Garden in Patna, was doing his routine job when he heard a baby cry.He found an abandoned newborn baby girl wrapped in a white cloth thrown in a nearby bush. He immediately took the child to senior zoo officials. But before they could decide anything, Paswan sought their permission to keep her. The officials subsequently took the baby to the police station to inform them that Paswan was keen to adopt the abandoned baby.Much to Paswan’s joy, the police officials allowed him to keep the baby and asked him to follow the legal adoption process if no relative turned up to claim her.Paswan said his son did not have any child even after 12 years of marriage and the baby was a godsend for his family.His wife and daughter-in-law were ecstatic when he brought the baby home. Paswan said the girl had brought immense joy to his family.Meanwhile, the news about the abandoned child spread like wildfire in the town and at least four well-to-do families approached the Patna zoo administration to adopt the child. But Paswan had already become her doting granddad by then. ===PATNA’S Mahavir Mandir has now set up its own website to enable devotees to worship the deity online.They can have Lord Hanuman’s darshan and watch all the rituals. The website was inaugurated by deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi, who said the online viewing of the deity would be of great help to the devotees residing in places far away. The temple earns very high revenue and much of its wealth goes towards charitable causes.
