(Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)Notre Dame and USC renew their football rivalry on October 12. The Fighting Irish are riding a two-game winning streak in the rivalry into 2019.Last season, ND opened with a huge win over Michigan. That dubbed that the school’s “green out” game for 2018.They didn’t go all the way with the theme that week, though. The Fighting Irish wore their standard blue uniforms for the occasion, opting for the greens later in the year against Florida State. With renewed attention being paid to Notre Dame football around the Liverpool-Borussia Dortmund friendly in South Bend, Notre Dame revealed this fall’s “green out.”The Fighting Irish are imploring their fans to break out the greens for the USC rivalry bout. On October 12th let’s turn the stadium GREEN!#GoIrish ☘️ #BeatSC pic.twitter.com/Sv5HtbK92Z— Notre Dame Football (@NDFootball) July 20, 2019While they didn’t do it last year, some are speculating that ND could break out the green uniforms to match the green out against USC, which would make sense. That might not be the most popular move though. Since their inception, Notre Dame has had very mixed results in the green alternates, especially when USC is involved. The most infamous game is probably the famous “Bush Push” game in 2005, a near upset for the Fighting Irish against the undefeated No. 1 Trojans. Thanks to Reggie Bush’s controversial push of Matt Leinart into the end zone for the game winning touchdown, USC came out on top 34-31.Luckily, the tide may be changing. Brian Kelly’s Irish teams are 4-0 in the greens. We’ll see if they break them out at all this fall, or put them back on the shelf after a few years without wearing them.
