NEW ORLEANS, LA – JANUARY 01: Jalen Hurts #2 of the Alabama Crimson Tide and Tua Tagovailoa #13 celebrate after winning the AllState Sugar Bowl against the Clemson Tigers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on January 1, 2018 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)Much was made of the quarterback controversy at Alabama heading into the 2018 season. After five weeks of action, both Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts have played in all five games – with Tua starting those contests.Hurts could have opted to transfer after four games with the new redshirt rule. However, he remained with the team as the Crimson Tide look to win back-to-back championships. With Tua being named the starter and playing the majority of snaps, it’s easy to assume the relationship between Tagovailoa and Hurts would fray as a result. However, according to AL.com, Tua suggests that’s not the case.According to Tua, Hurts attempted to ceremoniously pass the torch after Tagovailoa was named the starter.“So, before our flex lines it was after the Louisville game, a Monday practice, getting ready for Arkansas State, Jalen told me to go in front of him because now I am the starting quarterback and I am going to be the leader and whatnot. But I told him, ‘No,’ that he still belongs in that role just because of everything he has done. I think that was a very mature move of him trying to do that. I never would have thought of doing that. Just the maturity he has trying to do that, I thought was very special.”It’s rare to see two quarterbacks have each other’s backs as Hurts and Tagovailoa have displayed over the past two seasons. Ego gets in the way of most of these competitions, with the loser transferring to a different program – just ask Clemson.Up next for Alabama is a contest against Arkansas. The Crimson Tide don’t play a ranked opponent until the first weekend in November.
